I woke up in the new Italy...

Tak, wiem, juz bardzo dlugo nie pisalam. Nie bylo czasu, nie bylo ochoty. Po dwoch miesiacach uswiadomilam sobie, ze jednak tego pisania mi znowu brakuje. Chyba tak juz musi byc na moim blogu, ze od czasu do czasu, musze zrobic przerwe, musze skupic sie na innych, bardziej przyziemnych rzeczach (jak praca czy codzienne obowiazki), aby moc pozniej, z usmiechem wrocic do mojego bloga.

No i jestem. Jestem szczesliwa, bo to, co ostatnio dokonalo sie we Wloszech uznaje za cud.  Oczywiscie za wczesnie by skakac z radosci, bo zadnych konkretnych namacalnych zmian jeszcze nie ogloszono, ale liczy sie sam fakt, ze po kilkudziesiecioletniej “dyktaturze” pod rzadami Silvio Berlusconiego, przyszedl czas na zmiany. W ciagu 15 dni, zmienilo sie wszystko. Nikt nie uwierzylby, gdyby ktos miesiac temu powiedzial, ze dotychczasowy premier poda sie do dymisji. Kazdy powiedzialby: to zbyt piekne, by bylo prawdziwe. A jednak. Nowym premierem a jednoczesnie mistrem ds. ekonomii i finansow zostal Mario Monti, ktorego doswiadczenie oraz zaslugi sa doceniane wsrod wszystkich szefow Panstw czlonkowskich Unii Europejskiej i calej Komisji Europejskiej, gdzie przez 9 lat pelnil funkcje komisarza. Zeby dac Wam tylko zarys tego co sie stalo, przedstawiem Wam kilka faktow z ostatnich dni, powolujac sie na gazete “Repubblica” z 17 listopada 2011, czyli dzien po powolaniu nowego gabinetu przez Mario Monti.

1. Nowy rzad sklada sie z SAMYCH niezaleznych bezpartyjnych ekspertow w dziedzinach nauk politycznych, ekonomii, prawa, medycyny, bankowosci. Sa to wieloletni profesorzy, wykladowcy na uniwersytetach (tych wloskich I tych zagranicznych). Ministrem spraw zagranicznych zostal ambassador Wloch w Stanach Zjednoczonych, a na czele Obrony Narodowej stanal admiral, szef Komitetu Wojskowego NATO. Nie ma wsrod nich ani jednego polityka.
2. W porownaniu z poprzednim rzadem Berlusconiego, mamy tylko 16 Ministrow, a nie 21, jak poprzednio (powolanych przez Berlusconiego, by tylko podac reke znajomym oraz maksymalnie wykorzystac swoja wladze).
3. Srednia wieku w obecnym rzadzie to 63 lata. Poprzednio srednia wieku to 52 lata. Generalnie Pan Berlusconi uwielbial towarzystwo mlodszego damskiego pokolenia. Wystarczy tylko dodac, ze wszystkie poprzednie Panie Minister, byly przez Premiera nazywane “BAMBINE”, czyli “dziewczynki”…
4. Po bardzo krotkiej (trwajacej tylko 13 min) ceremonii  zaprzysiezenia nowego rzadu i jeszcze krotszym skromnym toascie, wszyscy bez zbednych ceregieli, poklepywania sie po plecach, glosnych gratulacji przez telefony komorkowe i dlugich dyskusji z dziennikarzami (co mialo miejsce podczas zaprzysiazenia poprzednich ministrow), elegancko wyszli z sali, udzielajac tylko niezbedych informacji czyhajacym na nich dziennikarzom i… zabrali sie do pracy. Pelna kultura, pelny bon ton.
5. W nowym rzadzie, Mario Monti wybral az 3 kobiety na najwazniejsze funkcje w kraju: Ministerstwo Spaw Wewnetrznych, Ministerstwo Sprawiedliwosci oraz Ministerstwo Pracy, Spraw Społecznych i Równouprawnienia.

Jak podsumowala gazeta, “Adesso comincia il percorso di guerra di Mario Monti” (Teraz dla Mario Monti zaczyna sie tor przeszkod). Mijemy nadzieje, ze pokona go bez zadnego problemu. Ma na to duze szanse oraz poparcie ze strony 85% spoleczenstwa wloskiego (i co najmniej jednej osoby ze spoleczenstwa polskiego).

Yes, I know, it’s been a while since I last wrote a post. There was no time, there was no strong willingness. After two months, however, I realized that I’m missing my writing. I think it just has to be so: every now and then, I need a shorter or longer break and concentrate on other, more mundane things (like work or daily responsibilities) to later, with a smile return to my blog.

Well, here I am. I am happy, because what recently has taken place in Italy, needs to be considered a miracle. Of course, too early to jump with joy, because any specific tangible changes have not yet been announced, but what counts is the fact that after several decades of the "dictatorship" under the rule of Silvio Berlusconi, time for a transformation has finally and inevitably come. Within 15 days, everything has changed. Nobody would ever believe if someone, a month ago said that the former Prime Minister would resign. Everyone would say: it's too good to be true. And yet. The new Prime Minister is Mario Monti, whose experience and merits are appreciated among all heads of European Union Member States and the entire European Commission, where for 9 years he worked as a commissioner. To give you just an outline of what happened, I’m going to present you a few facts from the last few days, citing the newspaper "Repubblica" from November 17 2011, i.e. the day after the appointment of a new cabinet.

1. Firstly, the new government consists of independent, non-party experts in the fields of political science, economics, law, medicine and banking. They have been professors and lecturers at many Italian and foreign universities for many years. The new Minister of Foreign Affairs is a former Italy’s ambassador to the United States (from 2009 until being appointed by Mario Monti), and the position of Minister of Defense is now held by the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee. There is not a single politician.
2. Secondly, we have only 17 Ministers, compared to the previous Berlusconi’s government, which counted 21 of them (obviously appointed by Berlusconi just to help his friends and use his newly acquired power to the maximum).
3. Thirdly, the average age of the Ministers in the current government is 63 years old. Previously the average age was 52 years. In short, Mr. Berlusconi loved the company of younger women. After all, all the female ministers were called “BAMBINE” (baby girls) by him.
4. After a very short (lasting only 13 min) swearing-in ceremony and an even shorter, extremely quiet toast, all, without further ado, without patting one other on the back, loud congratulations on the mobile phones and long discussions with journalists, graciously left the building, giving out only the indispensible information to the journalists and... started to work.
5. Last, but not least, In the new government, Mario Monti decided that three women will hold key posts in the country: the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Welfare.   

As summed up in the newspaper, "Adesso comincia il percorso di guerra di Mario Monti" (Now an assault course for Mario Monti begins). Let’s hope he’ll go through it without a single problem. He’s running a big chance to succeed, supported by 85% of the Italian population (and at least one person from the Polish society).

A hard week.

To byl dlugi i ciezki tydzien. Najpierw, w poniedzialek, R i ja dowiedzielismy sie o smierci naszego wspanialego przyjaciela, ktorego na szczescie mielismy okazje odwiedzic podczas naszych tegorocznych wakacji w Stanach. Czasami przeznaczenie stwarza takie dziwne okazje, ktore doceniamy tak naprawde dopiero we wlasciwym czasie.

It was a long and tough week. First, on Monday, we found out about death of our dear friend who we had an incredible chance to see during our holidays in the US last summer. We're so grateful to have had this possibility. Sometimes the destiny leads you to people and places which we are able to trully appreciate only in the right time after the occurrance happens.

Potem, we wtorek, dwa maile z odrzuceniem mojej kandydatury na:

1. fantastyczny darmowy kurs "Zarzadzanie, Ekonomia i Psychologia Turystyki" (po drugim etapie selekcji);

2. stanowisko administratora w szkole miedzynarodowej w Rzymie

Then, on Tuesday, I received 2 job/school rejection emails. Those regarded:

1. a fantastic free course in "Administration, Economy and Psychology of Tourism", after being selected as a short listed candidate

2. a position of a PA at an international school in Rome

W ten sam dzien, aplikowalam na nauczyciela jezyka angielskiego w Catanii. Po 2 godzinach, otrzymalam telefon z prosba o przyjscie na rozmowe kwalifikacyjna juz nastepnego dnia. Bylam zszokowana, ze zadzwonili tak szybko.

W srode, wiec autobusem o 8.30 rano udalam sie do Catanii. Pierwsza czesc "selekcji" to zwykly formularz zawierajacy dane osobowe, plus ok 10 pytan dotyczacych moich osobistych sukcesow i porazek, doswiadczen zawodowych, itp. itd. Druga czesc polegala na rozwiazaniu psychologicznego testu na osobowosc (!?), 16PF (16 Personality Factor Test) skladajacego sie ze 185 pytan ukazujacych sie na scianie za pomoca wyswietlajacego ich projektora w grupach po 4 pytania za kazdym razem. Tu znajdziecie szczegoly. Nastepnie, odbylam 20min rozmowe z przedstawicielem szkoly (psychologiem? rekruterem? nie wiem) a potem 40 min test z angielskiego. Test byl b. trudny. Nie chodzilo tylko o problemy gramatyczne, idiomy, czy slownictwo. Test obejmowal takze problemy historyczno-literacko-polityczne wszystkich krajow anglosaskich.

To bylo jedno z najtrudniejszych procesow rekrutacji, w jakich kiedykolwiek bralam udzial. Wszystko trwalo ok 2.5godz. i mialam wrazenie, ze aplikuje co najmniej na stanowisko dyrektora jakiegos ogromnego koncernu miedzynarodowego. Wrocilam do domu strasznie zmeczona.

Na pocieszenie znalazlam ten komiks (to rozmowa kwalifikacyjna do Ikei, a pan za biurkiem mowi: "Prosze usiasc"):

On the same day, I applied for a language teacher position in a school in Catania. To my great surprise, after 2hours, my phone rang and a nice lady from the school asked me to come to a job interview the following day.

On Wednesday, then I took the 8.30am bus and went to Catania. The first part of the selection entailed a simple personal data form plus a questionnaire with 10 questions regarding my personal and career experiences, my best and worst traits, etc. The second part included a psychological test called 16 Personality Factor Test embracing 185 questions and limited time to answer them all (about 50 mins). The questions popped out in groups of four. You can read more about it here. Next, I had a 20 min interview with the HR officer/psychologist and then  a 40 min test in English. Really difficult.  What puzzled me was the fact that not only did the quiz concern vocabulary, grammar or idioms but also a wide range of political/literary/historical issues in all the anglophone countries.

This was one of the most difficult job interviews I have ever taken part in. It felt as though I was applying for an international company director/manager position. I came home totally worn out.

Jakby tego bylo malo, wczoraj w naszej dzielnicy zabraklo wody (u nas zdarza sie to mniej wiecej raz w miesiacu, ze wzgledu na restrukturyzacje wodociagowa i prace, ktore sa obecnie wykonywane), a ja na wczoraj wlasnie zaplanowalam sprzatanie mieszkania... Bez komentarza.

If that wasn't enough, yesterday we lacked water in our building (this is trigged by the fact the whole district is undergoing some sewerage pipes & pumps refurbishment or sth) and I (of course) had planned to clean my apartment on that particular day. No comment.

Powinnam teraz zamknac sie w czarnej otchlani rozpaczy? Tak, to by bylo najlatwiejsze. Ale tego nie zrobie. Znalazlam ten napis: "Nie obawiaj sie poniesc porazki. Obawiaj sie nie probowac." Bardzo madre i bardzo przekonywujace.

Should I wallow in despair and self-pity? Yes, that's right, that would be the easiest thing to do. But I won't. I've stumbled upon this image today. I find this incredibly wise and convincing.

Miejmy nadzieje, ze chociaz weekend bedzie fajniejszy i spokojniejszy. Na jutro mamy zaplanowana wizyte na wystawie psow, ktora akurat odbywa sie w naszym miescie oraz spotkanie ze znajomymi na pizzy w Acqua del Ferro, czyli w miejscu, ktore ogromnie lubie, ale do ktorego udajemy sie dosc rzadko ze wzgledu na odleglosc (ok 1.5godz samochodem).

Let's just hope the weekend will be more fun. We're planning on dropping in on our friends who come to Syracuse for a dog exhibition. In addition, we're going for a pizza to Acqua del Ferro, a place I absolutely adore and which we don't frequent that often (it takes 1.5h drive to get there).

W niedziele natomiast wielkie pakowanie, gdyz juz w pon wylatuje na tydzien do Polski!!! Hurra!!! :)

On Sunday on the other hand, I'm packing as I'm leaving for Poland for a week this Monday!!! Hooray!! :)

Trends and style: my transformation.

W ostatnim roku wydaje mi sie, ze przechodze cos w sensie... hmm... wewnetrzej przemiany..?? Byc moze fakt, ze w tym roku zostane juz 30-letnia kobieta (tak tak... i wierzcie, ze ciezko ten numer przechodzi mi teraz przez gardlo) sprawia, ze na wszystko powinnam patrzec z "innej perspektywy". Chodzi mi o styl, ktoremu do tej pory bylam bezgranicznie wierna, a ktory zaczyna, jakby ewoluowac albo po prostu przechodzic jakas dziwna transformacje. Kolor rozowy i fioletowy, ktory dominuje (nadal do tej pory) w mojej szafie chyba przestaje mi byc juz "niezbedny do zycia" a styl "baby doll" powoli przestaje byc tym "najfajniejszym na swiecie"...

Dzis przez przypadek natknelam sie na "stare" (2009) specjalne wydanie wloskiego Vogue z najnowszymi kolekcjami na wiosne/lato. W srodku bylo pelno post-it z zaznaczonymi przeze mnie ciuchami, ktore wpadly mi wtedy w oko. Wiecie co? Ponad polowa dzisiaj juz mi sie nie podobala!

Dziwne to wszystko. Nawet dla mnie. Oto kilka ciuchow z pokazow na jesien - zima 2011, ktore mi sie podobaja, sa dla mnie jakas inspiracja, a ktorych na pewno nie zauwazylabym nawet jeszcze rok temu:

This year is quite significant for me taking into consideration the fact I’ll turn 30 this October (which I can hardly pronounce aloud!) Also, it looks like, I’m undergoing some kind of… style transformation?! I have no idea if these two things are somehow connected or not. The point is, I start to look at colors, materials, and patterns… from "a different perspective". I mean the style, which up to now I was extremely faithful to, right now, starts to evolve or/and is subjected to some kind of a strange transformation. Pink and purple which dominate (still today) in my closet, cease to be the only acceptable colors and the "baby doll” style the "coolest in the world"...

Today, I came across the "old" (2009) special issue of Italian Vogue with the latest collections for spring / summer. It was full of post-it notes which I attached to the clothes I liked best at that time being. You know what? I didn’t like more than half of them when I looked at them yesterday!

That’s all so strange. Even for me. Here are some shots from autumn - winter 2011 fashion shows. These clothes are not pink or purple and in spite of this I find them attractive and definitely get me very inspired! I’m sure I wouldn’t even notice them one year ago!

Ta ostatnia (Stella McCartney) to chyba jedna z najpopularniejszych sukienek w tym sezonie. Przynajmniej we Wloszech, gdzie widac ja wszedzie! Co druga prezenterka telewizyjna ma jakas jej wersje (dluzsza lub krotsza dlugosc) a ostatnio widzialam ja nawet w wersji kombinezonu (z dwoma nogawkami na Belen Rodrigez, zdjecie ponizej). Mnie najbardziej podoba sie ta powyzej (na Anji Rubik) oraz ta ostatnia na zdjeciu "zbiorowym".

The last dress (Stella McCartney) is probably one of the hippest this season. At least in Italy, where I can see every other TV presenter wearing a different version (shorter or longer) of it during various occasions and recently I have spotted the jumpsuit version worn by Belen Rodrigez (pic below). To my mind, the most beautiful is the one above (worn by Anja Rubik) as well as the last one in the collective picture.

Inspiration: a wedding dress

Jak wiecie, w tym okresie w mojej rodzinie rozmawia sie prawie tylko na temat slubu, wesela, fryzur, butow, itd a to wszystko za sprawa slubu mojego brata, ktory juz tuz tuz, tj. 8.10.2011!

Przez przypadek, natknelam sie na kolejna suknie slubna, ktora zrobila na mnie wielkie wrazenie. I nie kosztuje €1000 albo 4000zl tylko $840 czyli €630 czyli 2500zl. Duzo, ale bez przesady. Suknia jest w przecudownym lekko rozowym kolorze, przez co staje sie b. uniwersalna i naprawde moglaby byc uzyta ponownie z innymi dodatkami. Super! Mozecie zamowic tutaj.

As you know, at present, in my family we’re talking almost only about the wedding reception, haircuts, shoes, etc. and it is all because of my brother's wedding, which is already behind the door, i.e. 08.10.2011!

By chance, I came across another gorgeous wedding dress, which made a huge impression on me. And does not cost € 1000 or 4000zl only $ 840 or € 630 or 2500zl. That’s still a lot, but not too much. This wonderful dress is hand dyed to pink perfection from a blend of champagne, ecru and rose.  The color makes it truly universal and it could be used again with other accessories on different occasions.
